Following the successful Weymouth Speed Week 2000 Jonti announce that they wish to help sponsor future events by providing marker buoys.

Many thanks!

Please visit their web site or see them at Grafham Water.

Friday 6 October

Very light winds, most competitors enjoyed the respite to wash down their equipment and discuss the modifications they are planning to make to their craft in order to go faster next year.

Thursday 5 October

The shore course once again proved its worth with many 30+ knot runs being recorded by the windsurfers. The new windspeed and wind direction data logging equipment is giving valuable data reliably now following a few initial teething problems (operator error!).

Wednesday 4 October

Light winds, it was good to see the Chapman's Calliope foil borne and making excellent use of the available wind.

Tuesday 3 October

Ran two courses, both an inshore course off the beach and a course between boats in the harbour. Over 370 speed runs recorded. Fastest windsurfer 31.96 knots, fastest boat Concept 25 18.77 knots.

Monday 2 October

Winds gusting to 47 knots first thing. The course was run from the shore as it was too difficult (dangerous) to get the equipment out to the stake boats.

The first course was 318 metres in length. A speed of 37 knots was recorded by Richard Jones. Breaking the old Weymouth record of 36 knots set 20 years ago by Crossbow. We attempted to set a longer course but sadly the wind direction made this a very broad course. There were many runs over 30 knots. It was good to see Nick Beaney (381) consistently putting in 30+ knot runs.

Sunday 1 October

Good day. 20 knots of wind. 260+ timed runs. The fastest run was 29.72 knots by windsurfer Peter Martin. The fastest boat was the Chapman's foil borne Calliope at 16.92 knots.

Weymouth Speed Week 2000
From 30th September to the 6th of October 2000

The venue has changed to the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. This is located on the site of the old Naval Helicopter Base at the Portland end of Chesil Beach. Just follow the Portland road through Weymouth town past the Ferrybridge and across Chesil Beach.

There are several new boats and kite powered craft that will be coming to Weymouth for their first Speed Week. The windsurfers will again be trying to demonstrate that they are the fastest on the water.

This event is unique in that it caters for all types of craft and all levels of ability come and complete some runs on the course - it is great fun. The Amateur Yacht Research Society will be providing boats and equipment to conduct towing trials and drag measurements if any one is interested.

This year the organisers have once again invested in the timing equipment. For the first time if conditions allow we shall be running two courses simultaneously. The new course will be an inshore course ideally suited to sail boards. In addition there will be the usual course for those boats requiring deeper water.

The costs are the same as for last year. £120 for boats and £75 for kite or sail boarders (for boards there is an option of sailing for only one day or two days).

For those coming to Weymouth Speed Week who need a contact telephone number please call Robert Downhill on 0860 711127 or Nick Povey on 0771 340 1292 or e-mail nick@speedsailing.com

Each day we shall post details of the craft competing and the results - If you are not able to attend then follow the events on this web site.
