Speed Week 2002 News

Speed Week 2002

2nd October
Very little wind but a very good day for discussions and testing. Memorable for George Reekie holding onto a 23 m2 kite whilst on Slade Penoyre's catapult.

1st October
Southerly wind of 5-10 knots, overcast with prolonged showers. Not speed sailing weather! Despite this Joddy Chapman put in a superb set of times on Ceres the foil borne catamaran.

30th September
Very light winds in the morning dropping to virtually nothing mid afternoon.

29th September
Windspeeds were around 12-15 knots the fastest boat speed was just shy of 20 knots (Ceres Hydrofoil) and the fastest board was 23 knots. A 14 foot skiff tried two runs and achieved 15 knots. Full details can be found on the results page.

28th September
First day sailing with light winds of around 10 knots. Hydrofoils reign supreme - Ceres records 17+ knots. Results have been posted on this site.

27th September
All packed and ready to drive to Weymouth

24th September
Wind is forecast! The current outlook suggests that during the weekend the wind will increase from 10 knots and build to 20 knots south westerly on Monday as a low approaches the UK from across the Atlantic.

For anyone looking for accommodation during the week we have been informed that there are three two bedroom self catering flats available in Castle Cove over looking the harbour www.glenthorne-holidays.co.uk for details.

This year we are pleased to have received confirmation that visitors and competitors from France, Germany and the USA will be attending. There will also be several new boats coming to Weymouth Speed Week for the first time this year, at last two of them are foil borne craft. One is from Southampton University.

Our intention this year is to run two speed courses when conditions are suitable, a shallow water 'beach course' of 200 metres length, the harbour course will be set in deeper water and will be the normal 500 metres in length.

Spectators are always welcome, the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy is open to all during Speed Week.
