Speed Week 2003 - Results

8th October

Two courses were run simultaneously, the wind was WNW, this gave a very broad reach along the beach course which suited the kites. The 'harbour course' was set to suit the boards and boats with a course angle to the wind of approximately 130 degrees. This course was as close to the shore as water depth allowed for the timing boats.

The Weymouth 500 metre record of 36 knots that was set by Crossbow in 1980 was threatened by Bjorn Dunkerbeck who achieved 35 knots. If it wasn't for this result then the kites would have been the fastest sailing craft! Cyril Pimont achieved 33.27. Joddy Chapman in Ceres the hydrofoil catamaran recorded 22 knots.

7th October

Evening. The wind wasn't kind as it swung to the north which gave a course in heavy chop. Bjorn Dunkerbeck was fastest at 32.73.

a.m. Good speeds yesterday, Bjorn Dunkerbeck and David Garrel had many impressive runs with David just coming out on top when he timed a run with a good gust and a slight wind shift, his speed was 34.92 knots. There were some very impressive kite speeds with Cory Roeseler achieving 32.08 knots using a 14 metre kite. Today Bjorn and David have promised to break the Weymouth 500 metre record of 36 knots!
